French Press, Percolator and Moka Pot Compared

Coffee is universal—people from all over the world cannot start their day right without a dose of this well-loved beverage. But this tasty, fragrant drink is more than just a source of caffeine. These days, the process of making a cup is considered an art and there are plenty of ways that one can brew his or her favorite cup of joe.

There are three old-school, buzzed-about methods among coffee enthusiasts and they are the percolator, the French press and the moka pot. In this article, we are going to discuss the ways in which these nifty machines churn out coffee and their corresponding advantages.

French Press

The french press is a kind of coffee pot that has a sizable glass cylinder which includes a flat filter connected to a lengthy handle on its lid. The whole set-up lets users place the coffee grounds in the bottom of the device, position the filter on top and pour in hot water.

To use the press, first you should take away and rinse the plunger with hot water. You might also prefer to fill up the glass pot and cups with hot water before using to keep your coffee hot. Following this procedure, you can now dispense the hot water and put the coffee grounds into the bottom of the device.

Pour the hot (not boiling) water into the pot and set aside an inch of space at the top of the device. Mix the coffee and water with a plastic spoon then position the plunger back over the glass pot. Be certain that the lid is turned so it obstructs the pouring spout.

Do not drop the plunger at once. Let the mixture brew for a few minutes, then lower the plunger bit by bit until it’s dropped all the way to the bottom of the device. Once positioned at the bottom, you can now rotate the lid to unlock the spout and dispense your coffee.

Using a press retains the coffee oils in the mixture. This provides a rich, flavorful pot of coffee. However, some individuals are not fond of the sediment in their cups, a knock-on effect of this particular method.

A press is also a great gauge of the freshness of the coffee grounds. Once the hot water is added in the mix, fresh coffee will fizz up substantially while old coffee will not.

Percolator

This device is touted as a vintage coffee maker because it has been around since the ‘70s. Back then, it was the most popular method for brewing a cup. It’s composed of a chamber that carries the water and a lengthy tube with a filter basket located at its top end.

The filter basket of the device consists of punctured metal but there are available models which takes in paper filters. Once the filter is filled with granular coffee grounds, the water is then heated by means of a stovetop burner or a built-in electric component. As soon as the water boils, it is taken up the tube and passed through the grounds constantly.

Stove-top models like those made from tin, glass or stainless steel are the most coveted among units, especially for those who are into hiking and camping but for home use, the first choice is always the electric model. The electric type features a convenient automatic brewing sequence built for the best possible taste and flavor.

However, the percolator has its fair share of disadvantages. Enthusiasts who didn’t like this method said that the water tends to get overheated, the brew too extracted and the brewing process scatters the intricate, unstable blend into the air, leaving a rather weak cup.

Moka Pot

The device is composed of three components, mainly the chamber, a middle section which carries the coffee grounds and a top section where the brewed coffee streams into.

The moka pot is often positioned on the stove to heat the water. Because the lower chamber is hermetically-sealed, the increasing air is pushed down on the water and gets shoved up the lower tube throughout the coffee and the above tube. It gets squirted out of the tube then trickles down into the top reservoir’s bottom part.

After the procedure, the brew is ready to be dispensed. The moka pot works in the same vein as a vacuum pot, the difference being the water is pushed throughout the coffee and the brewed mixture stays put in the topmost portion of the device.

The unit is good for making a stronger cup of joe, with a rich taste and espresso-like texture. However, the process for brewing can be slow and the procedure requires more focus. In addition, the setup and cleaning afterwards are a bit more complex.

Aeropress Coffee and Espresso Maker

Aeropress Coffee and Espresso Maker (click to enlarge)

The AeroPress has caused a ruckus among coffee enthusiasts for its distinctive manner of making coffee. Coffee lovers from the laidback down to the staid fan of joe have thrown praises on the gadget because of the way it churns out the stuff; smooth, packed with flavor and ultra-rich.

What makes the AeroPress really so good? You might have wondered, others may have mulled over whether this particular gadget is worth the purchase or just plain overblown hype. Let’s dig in and see what the gadget offers.

Click here to get the price of the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker

Specifications

The unit offers a unique and newfangled means to make your coffee. While other coffee makers dribble water on a layer of grounds with its over-extracts and under-extracts, the AeroPress is micro-filtered for a cup that’s free from grit. It’s capable of serving 1-4 cups of coffee or espresso and also includes a pack of 350 micro-filters.

Other available specs are as follows:

  • Makes 1 to 4 cups of coffee or espresso
  • Coffee maker and Espresso maker
  • One minute coffee time
  • Press time is only 20 seconds
  • Made from high-quality plastic material
  • BPA and BPS free
  • Manufactured by Aerobie in the USA

Design & Features

Aeropress Coffee and Espresso Maker system explainedThe unit is a distinctive coffee-making gadget that makes use of a press that is high in pressure and this results in actual fact, shots of espresso instead of a normal cup of joe. The unit fastidiously extracts the coffee from its grounds to offer consumers a cup of lush coffee free of unpalatable grit and bitterness.

It’s a 3-piece unit that appears similar to a syringe. In the whole package are 2 cylinders, both built to fit each other with a flanged portion at one section. The tinier of the two cylinders acts as the plunger and it features a rubber piece at its non-flanged base—this produces a tight seal once it is plunged into the device’s brewing slot, which is the larger among the cylinders.

Aeropress Coffee and Espresso Maker - simple instructionsThe third piece in the system is a black punctured filter container that measures around a half-inch deep. This filter is positioned then secured to the brewing slot with rapid screwing motions.

Comparison to the French Press

In actuality, the device works the way a French press would since both units make use of pressure and complete immersion brewing. In terms of functionality and convenience, the specific device provides output in the same vein as an espresso machine without the kinks of the French press. The unit has a great design which makes for brewing using pressure at a rapid pace and lower temperatures.

Using high pressure in coffee-brewing translates that plenty of flavor will be had from the grounds and at the same time, it will prevent the risk of scorching the beans which can ruin the taste of the coffee by making them bitter. The device’s fast brewing time also denotes that users will avoid over-extracting their drink, another reason why coffee at times have that unwanted bitter, acidic taste.

It has a micro-filtering method that is more improved and sophisticated than a French press to provide a cup minus the residue. In addition, the device, measured against the espresso machine, is more straightforward and provides a multi-purpose cup of joe which can be used as a foundation for espresso-centered drinks like cappuccinos and lattes.

Aeropress Coffee and Espresso Maker - easy to usePros

  • It’s portable and lightweight thus backpackers, campers and travelers will be able to pack them inside their bags. Great for people who can’t go on journeys without their coffee.
  • Easy to clean.
  • High-pressure process makes for fast brewing of coffee. And a delicious one at that.
  • Users can also make espresso by means of this device.

Cons

  • Brewing a cup on this baby might take some muscle.
  • Users would have to find filters that will suit the device.
  • Folks who don’t want coffee-making items made from plastic will be put off by the product. However the company maintains that the product has been free from BPA properties since 2009.

It is handy, fast, makes a cup of coffee minus the unnecessary sediment and bitter flavors and is portable to boot. You can also make espresso out of this device other than a normal cup of joe so this is a guaranteed keeper.

Hamilton Beach Two-Way Single-Serve Coffee Maker Review

Hamilton Beach 49980Z Coffee Maker

Hamilton Beach Two-Way Coffee Maker (click to enlarge)

The Hamilton Beach “2-way” is one of my favorite coffee makers because it serves as both a single serve brewer and an actual coffee maker. If you want a quick cup of coffee, you’re good to go. If you have guests drop over unexpectedly, you’ll be able to brew 12-cups of coffee with the same coffee maker – it’s very convenient.

Great Quality

The exterior features a stainless-steel plated exterior that is both durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Design & Features

For an entry-level model, this coffee maker includes a lot of top-end features that make your coffee brewing even easier. Plus, how often do you come across a coffee maker than can brew two at once?!

Click here to get the price of the Hamilton Beach Two-Way Coffee Maker
  • Two-way brewing.
  • 12-cup glass carafe
  • One-time filling reservoir.
  • Pod holder.
  • Regular or bold brew strength.
  • 24-hour brew programming.
  • 2-hour shut off.

Fast and easy to use. This model allows you to use coffee pods and even comes with a pod holder. Users that don’t like pods will be happy with the mesh filter that allows for ground coffee to be used.

A digital display allows you to schedule a brew 24-hours in advance. For anyone that loves hot coffee once they come home from work, you’ll love this feature.

When it comes to brewing, it’s fast and simple. Simply choose the brew strength: regular or bold, and then choose the size: single or carafe. This is an amazing option because you can brew a 14-ounce cup of coffee quickly if you don’t need to brew a whole pot of coffee. Or, you can choose to brew a 12-cup pot of coffee. The single-serve size does have a multilevel cup rest, so any cup will fit under the spigot.

I also appreciate that Hamilton Beach uses a glass carafe due to plastics leaving an off taste.

Easy Maintenance and Cleaning System

There isn’t a fancy cleaning cycle or any filters to change with this model. Instead, you’ll only need to clean the exterior and the pod or ground holder. The mesh coffee filter comes out and can be ran right under the sink. The glass carafe can also be cleaned with a sponge.

Durability & Longevity

Simple in design, Hamilton Beach models are known to last for years. Many users still use this model daily after 4 years of ownership. For the price, you really can’t expect much more in the durability and longevity department.

Price

Expect to pay several hundreds of dollars for this model? You’re way off. Just check the price of this model!

Pros

  • Dual brewing technology.
  • 24-hour timer.
  • Adjustable spigot.
  • 2-hour safety shut off.

Cons

  • Slow single-size brew.

I love the design of this model because it gives you the utmost in brewing options. The one area where I was slightly disappointed was the actual time it took to brew the single serve cup. Maybe I am spoiled by the 1 – 2 minute models, but I did expect it to be a little faster.

However, very few coffee makers offer this dual-brew option. For me, I am impressed with Hamilton Beach. This coffee maker never burns the coffee, extracts the utmost in flavor and comes at an unbeatable price.

Simple and easy to use, the Keurig K75 is a great choice for the single-cup crowd that wants an immense amount of flavor, functionality and power from a coffee maker that fits neatly on any countertop.

Keurig Quality

Keurig is known for their quality. This model features hard plastic with stainless steel parts.

Design & Features

The K75 is simple to use, yet it comes with a few must-know design features that make coffee making a breeze:

Click here to get the price of the Keurig K75 Platinum Coffee Maker
  • 5 brew-size options.
  • K-Cup compatible.
  • 72-ounce reservoir.
  • LCD display.
  • Digital clock.
  • Adjustable brew temperature.
  • Descale indicator.
  • Dishwasher-safe parts.
  • Brews coffee, tea, hot cocoa and even iced beverages.
  • Award winning design.
  • 4-minute brew time; 15 second reheat between brewing.

Keurig has an initial setup that will guide you through your first brew. This is a simple process that really only involves adding water, adding your K-Cup and choosing your desired settings. Once complete, you’ll be able to use this model as normal.

The 5 brew-size options allow you to choose between 4-, 6-, -8-, 10- and 12-ounce options. The reservoir has enough water to brew up to 10 cups of coffee without needing to be refilled. Brewing will take 4 minutes initially for the water to fully heat up. If you want to brew another cup immediately, there is a built-in wait time of 15-seconds, which is all that’s needed to reheat the water.

A built-in water filter will remove any impurities in your water. Don’t worry, the filter is included. This is the hardest part of the initial setup.

Maintenance & Cleaning

You’ll need to change the water filter – it is costly – and perform regular cleaning. Descaling is recommended using vinegar, but be warned, you’ll want to run a full brewing cycle if you use vinegar for descaling.

All of the parts are dishwasher safe, so there will be very little cleaning left for you to do.

Durability & Longevity

How long will the K75 last? I have a friend that has owned this model since 2012 and has had no complaints after 3+ years of use. Keurig is known for their long-lasting coffee makers and the K75 is no exception.

Price

Price wise, you’ll spend quite a few hundred dollars for this model. A lot of people are trying to get their hands on the K75, and with over 1,100+ reviews, this model often sells out fast.

Pros

  • Simple setup.
  • Large water reservoir.
  • Water filtration system.
  • A variety of available cup sizes.

Cons

  • Expensive water filter.

The quality of a Keurig’s coffee is top notch. Anyone that has ever tried a Keurig will attest to the great flavor of the coffee. The only small issue with this model is that the water filter is rather expensive to replace.

The K75 is the perfect choice for offices and homes alike. An initial 4-minute brew is fast, and a 15-second stop until the next brewing cycle is extremely beneficial. If you need a single-cup coffee maker, the Keurig K75 is one of the best in the world.

Mr. Coffee CG13 12-Cup Switch Coffee Maker Reviewed

Mr. Coffee CG13 Coffee Maker

Mr. Coffee CG13 Coffee Maker (click to enlarge)

Do you want a very affordable, reliable coffee maker? If so, the Mr. Coffee CG13 may be the right choice for you. This coffee maker doesn’t come with a fancy bean grinder, but it comes with all of the necessary features to brew a 12-cup pot of coffee – no frills.

High-Quality

The CG13 is made by the famed Mr. Coffee brand. Featuring hard plastic and a built-in water filter, this model can produce delicious coffee for years.

No-Frills Design

Sometimes, simple is better. With a no-frills design, available in black and white, you’ll be able to make coffee just the way you want without worrying about a burr grinder or a froth maker breaking, rendering your machine useless.

Click here to get the price of the Mr. Coffee CG13 12-Cup Coffee Maker

This model does come with all the necessary features you need:

  • 12-cup coffee capacity.
  • Water filtration for better tasting coffee (optional).
  • Dual water windows.
  • Top coffee filter holder.
  • Pause ‘n Serve option.

Simple and easy to use. First, you’ll want to fill up the water reservoir. Featuring a dual window design, you’ll be able to see the exact level of water currently in your machine. Once done, you’ll want to open the top of the coffee maker to put in your coffee filter and coffee grounds.

Now, simply turn on the machine and wait for it to finish.

If you want to sneak a cup of coffee halfway through the brewing cycle, you’ll be able to remove the carafe and pour yourself a cup. This model automatically puts itself into pause mode, so you can serve yourself coffee – without the wait.

If you don’t put in filtered water, you can buy a filter for this model directly from Mr. Coffee. However, this is an optional feature.

Maintenance & Cleaning

If you choose to use the water filter, you’ll need to replace your filters periodically. Cleaning is fast and easy. The carafe can be cleaned with a sponge and water as well as the exterior of the machine. The coffee filter will lift out and can be cleaned using the same method.

When first getting this machine, I recommend running a cycle with white vinegar first. After, run two cycles with just hot water. This will remove the initial awkward taste of a new coffee machine.

Extreme Durability

This model is very inexpensive. While some users said this model only last 1 – 2 years, others have had it for much longer. For the price, it’s a bargain (more on that next).

Affordable Price

The CG13 doesn’t cost a lot, it’s actually very affordable! You won’t find a 12-cup coffee maker with this level of durability and quality for cheaper.

Pros

  • 12-cup capacity.
  • Bottom cord storage.
  • Easy to use.
  • Dual water window.

Cons

  • Produces a lot of steam.
  • Leaks if filled too high.

The steam issue is not a big deal, but the leaking can be if you’re not careful. There are overflow holes in the reservoir. If you fill past this point, water may leak. Ideally, you’ll fill right to the 12-cup mark or slightly below. This will also produce the best-tasting coffee.

Design & Features

There’s a lot to like with this little brewer:

  • K-Cup compatible to brew coffee, tea and cocoa.
  • 40-ounce water reservoir for multiple brews without refilling.
  • 6, 8 and 10-ounce brew sizes.
  • Removable drip tray.
  • Large enough to fill a travel mug.

There are no advanced programmability features, so you can begin brewing in seconds. First, you can choose from a variety of K-Cups to make coffee, tea or cocoa. Then, you’ll add water and choose your desired cup size before turning on the brew cycle.

There is a water indicator on the front of the machine that will illuminate when water levels are low.

Moving on to the actual brewing cycle, a variety of cup sizes, 6 – 10 ounces, can be placed under the spout. If you need more room, you can remove the drip pan to fit a full-sized travel mug under the spout. From my experience, you will need to run more than one brew cycle to fill a mug of this size.

Taste-wise, you’ll enjoy the same great taste that Keurig models are known for right from this Mr. Coffee model.

Maintenance & Cleaning

The drip tray is removable and can be cleaned under the sink. Since you’re using K-Cups, simply press the top forward and remove when not in use. Everything else can be wiped down. Even the water reservoir comes out, so you can rinse it under the sink.

Durability & Longevity

There is a 1-year warranty included and many users have been using this model for 1 – 2 years without any issues. From my own experience, most coffee makers that break do so in the first few months of ownership, meaning you’ll be able to return them within the warranty period.

Mr. Coffee models normally last 3 – 5 years without any issue.

Price

This model won’t set you back a lot. Especially considering its features and pros – a steal for Keurig taste and Mr. Coffee craftsmanship.

Pros

  • Keurig brewing technology.
  • 1 minute brewing cycle.
  • A variety of brew-sizes.
  • Easy to clean.

Cons

  • Forced to use K-Cups.

Initially, you’re forced to use K-Cup pods, which means you can’t use your own coffee. However, you can purchase a pod that does let you use your own coffee, which is what I recommend if you like grinding up your own coffee beans.

Mr. Coffee mixed with Keurig technology makes this an affordable coffee maker that produces a flavorful coffee. You won’t find another coffee maker in this price range that can produce great tasting coffee in just 1 minute.

The Cuisinart DTC-975BKN was a coffee maker that was on my “must-try” list for quite some time. I had heard nothing but great things about this model, and after testing it out myself, I’m sold. It features convenient programmability and a thermal carafe that keeps coffee hot for hours. Let’s take a closer look at this model to see what else the DTC-975BKN has to offer.

A Solid Coffee Maker

Let’s start with the overall construction of this coffee maker. The exterior is made of tough, durable black plastic with steel accents. The carafe is double-walled insulated stainless steel. This is a solid coffee maker that’s well-designed and well-engineered.

Convenient Features for Busy Coffee Lovers

What’s the one feature that everyone looks for in a coffee maker? Programmability. And the DTC-975BKN doesn’t skimp out here. With 24-hour programmability, you can automatically brew coffee whenever you want.

The DTC-975BKN brews up to 12 (5 ounce) cups of coffee at a time. This model doesn’t come with a typical glass carafe. It comes with a stainless steel, double-walled insulated carafe that will keep your coffee hot for hours. And the carafe has a patented pour-through, brew-through lid that keeps air out and your coffee fresh.

Cuisinart even makes it easy and convenient to fill up your coffee maker. The reservoir cover lifts up, so you can fill it with water. Just close the cover once it’s full, and you’re good to go.  The water window also has magnified markings that let you know how much water is needed to make the corresponding cups of coffee.

And if you’re dying for a cup of coffee, you can pause the brewing cycle and pour yourself a cup. The DTC-975BKN has just about every feature you could want in a drip coffee maker.

Easy to Clean and Maintain

The great thing about Cuisinart’s DTC-975BKN brewer is that’s relatively simple in design – and that makes it so easy to clean. The black plastic housing and steel accents wipe clean with a towel or sponge. The carafe, made from stainless steel, is also easy to clean.

And the DTC-975BKN is virtually maintenance- free as it doesn’t come with any complicated mechanical features. Just treat this coffee maker as you would any other model.

Highly Durable for Years of Use

Made from durable, rugged materials, the DTC-975BKN is built to last. Under normal use, this machine will last for years. And Cuisinart offers a three-year warranty, so your purchase is protected.

A Price That’s Hard to Beat

You can find the DTC-975BKN in the retail shops for around $100. You get a fantastic coffee maker with programmability for an unbeatable price.

Pros

  • Fully automatic brewing with 24-hour programmability.
  • Brew-through, pour-through carafe lid blocks air to keep coffee fresh and hot.
  • Brews up to 12 cups at a time.
  • Easy-to-fill water tank with clear markings, so you know exactly how much water to add.
  • Brew pause lets you pour a cup mid-cycle.

Cons

  • Slow brewing

It takes quite a bit of time to brew a full pot of coffee, but with the programmable feature, this really shouldn’t be an issue.

If you’re looking for a coffee maker that’s convenient, easy to use and will keep your coffee hot for hours, I highly recommend the Cuisinart DTC-975BKN.
